Couponing 101

January 14, 2013

Ever since the near financial collapse of 2008, the art of couponing has become more like a sport than a mere shopping strategy. The reason for this surge in popularity is that the savings can be significant, and when you are operating on a tight budget every penny counts.

To get started, it’s important that you figure out a way to keep the coupons organized and accessible. Filing them by date is one way to handle this task, but it can be challenging to keep up with it as you become better at playing this game and begin to amass large quantities of coupons. Another option is to use a small accordion file and create labels to file the coupons by category. Whatever your method, it is always helpful if the file is small enough to take along to the store.

In the old days, it was necessary to spend hours searching through newspapers and magazines to find coupons for items you actually used. Today, the Internet provides an excellent way to find coupons for almost anything by performing a simple search by brand name, and the best part is that they are likely printable, which means no clipping is needed! Just be sure to use the black and white setting on your printer to avoid paying for excessive amounts of color ink.

It may sound silly, but don’t stress about unused or expired coupons and accept the fact that you will not be able to use every coupon that is saved. By only using coupons for items that you really need, you will spend less money and get the biggest benefit. On the same token, avoid buying an item you don’t need just because you have a coupon for it, as this will actually work against your efforts to save money by enticing you to spend more.

It is also a good idea to plan your shopping trip – and coupon usage – as much as possible before heading out the door. By going armed with a shopping list and coupons for items you definitely need ready to go, you will cut down on the amount of time spent in the store. Also, by stockpiling key items that are on sale each week and you know will be used in your household, you will save even more money in the long run by never paying full price.

Although the Internet is an awesome resource, newspapers still offer plenty of savings. The trick is to buy more than one newspaper, or to ask family and friends who don’t coupon to save their inserts for you. Even local businesses may be willing to share these unwanted pages, allowing you to stock up and save multiple versions of coupons for things you use often.

Finally, take time to read online about different couponing strategies. Also, take advantage of the savings card programs offered at pharmacies, gas stations and grocery stores. By learning where and when savings can be found, you will quickly maximize the benefit coupons provide.
